We Finally Played Randonautica... And Here's My Thoughts

Ever since I first heard about Randonautica, I thought it was going to be terrifying. If you’ve ever fallen down a TikTok rabbit hole of people stumbling upon eerie locations, strange symbols, or even abandoned crime scenes, you know exactly what I mean.

The app promises to send you on a random adventure based on your intentions, which felt like an invitation to step right into a horror movie. Naturally, I was intrigued.

So, after hyping myself up (and making sure I wasn’t alone because, you know, self-preservation), I finally decided to try it. And, the fact that it was on my 2025 goals, I kinda had to do it. So, Luke, Benji, and I headed off on a Randonautica adventure one Sunday afternoon.

Setting the intention

Before you start your journey, Randonautica asks you to set an intention—basically, a thought or theme you want to manifest. I went full spooky mode and chose something eerie, hoping to uncover something mysterious, unexplained, or just straight-up creepy. You’d think that would be easy with all the internet stories of people finding dolls in the woods, cryptic messages, or suspiciously placed suitcases (yikes).

But, uh… that’s not exactly how it went.

The Reality of Randonauting

We decided to make a vlog of it too (see above) and basically just have a go. The intention we focused on was creepy for the first few tries and honestly, we didn't find much at first. Our first location took us to somewhere in Pascoe Vale and the creepiest thing there was a Buddha statue and that's not very creepy imo. After a few more tries, we ended up in Coburg where we found a kinda "creepy" residential building that had bars on the windows.

Street scene with clear sky, tree, parked cars, bike lane, and beige building. Stop sign visible. Bright, sunny day.

I'm guessing here was just our brains doing "confirmation bias" aka reinforcing that we're looking for something creepy, so let's make it creepy. But barred windows on a residential apartment building seem odd to me? We also saw a demolished house so I guess that's also kinda creepy, but I still wasn't convinced. Where was the abandoned asylum? The weirdly placed red balloons? The shadowy figures lurking just out of sight?!

And so, we kept trying, convincing ourselves that if we beleived hard enough, something eerie would appear. And it didn't, well, not at first.

We ended up changing our intention to "wholesome" and so off we went to somewhere in Preston, kinda near the markets and we found the weirdest thing. A hot dog scarecrow? I don't even know how to describe it. I'll post a pic below:

Colorful totem pole with polka dots and cape in a garden, near modern white building. Bright day, pathway with potted plants nearby.

This was the most exciting thing we found all day and so we left it at that.

Final Thoughts

Soooo....No mysterious symbols, no ominous vibes—just a lot of walking and driving around and hoping to make sense of random coordinates. And, I don't get why the hot dog scarecrow thing was what we found once we changed our intention. While, we didn't stumble across anything super terrifying, I do see the appeal of Randonautica. It’s a fun way to explore new areas and let a little randomness into your life. But if you’re hoping for a paranormal experience, you might end up feeling a little let down—unless you’re really good at convincing yourself that a discarded fast-food bag is an ominous sign.

Would I try it again? Maybe, but next time, I’m bringing some extra spooky energy and a backup plan… just in case the app finally decides to play along. And surprisingly, Luke enjoyed it much more than I thought he was going to (I think he surprised himself too). The app kinda lets you appreciate the place you live a bit more, finding new spots and new haunts to go to.

Have you ever tried Randonautica? Did you find anything creepy, or was it just a glorified walking tour? Let me know in the comments!

Much love,

Ash
