Ways to Make Money Online 2024

Updated: Sep 24

Hi friends! In today's blog, we're going to take a look at some of the side hustles you can do if you want to make money online (Now this isn't the equivalent of full time salary but if you want to make a little extra side income, keep reading). I was inspired by "this blog" to create this post so make sure you check out Topic Blends for some more side hustle ideas. It's pretty cool. I feel like blogging is making a massive comeback in 2024 and I hope it stays that way.

Also this is mostly relevant to Australia and those with an Australian PayPal account. You can also find worldwide sites with a quick google search too.

Online Surveys: This is probably one of the most known ways to make a bit of extra cash online but if you have a bit of extra time on your hands and don't mind filling out surveys, you can do this for an extra bit of moola! I also kinda feel like if people are taking our data anyway, why not get paid for it? Here's my go to sites:

  • Qmee.com - one of my favourites as there's no minimum requirement to cash out, you can take surveys, find cashback deals and play games to earn PayPal money.

  • Opinionworld.com - if all you want to do is answer surveys, this is a great site and rewards come relatively quickly too! You can cash out 500 points for $10 in PayPal money or grab an Amazon gift card.

  • MyOpinions.com - another one like Opinion World but you've gotta be at 2000 points to be able to cash out $20 PayPal.

  • MetroOpinion.com - I don't really get a lot of surveys from this site but once you read $17AUD, you can cash out into PayPal (there's also Visas and a few other things too).

  • slicethepie.com - not really a fan of surveys? You can still do surveys here BUT you can also review music - the higher rating you get, the more you get paid for rating music. It's pretty fun if you wanna listen to music and write about it. The minimum cashout threshold is $10.

  • SwagBucks.com - I'm not big on this site but for some people they can make a lot of extra income from it. It does take a long time to get to the threshold for payouts but once you reach them, there is plenty of options of things to choose from from PayPal to Amazon to iTunes etc.

  • Prolific.com - one of my favourite ones I used to use back in NZ as it paid in pounds rather than dollar amounts so the exchange rate to PayPal was really high. However, they now have a waiting list because of how popular it is but once you're in, it's amazing to use!

  • LifePointsPanel.com - I have only just signed up to this one so I don't know how well it does with rewards and cashing out but you can cash out with vouchers or PayPal money.

  • YouGov.com - This one only lets you cash out for vouchers (unfortunately there is no more PayPal option) but once you reach 5000 points, you have a few choices from asos to Coles to JB Hi-Fi vouchers.

UserTesting: User Testing can be a great way to make a little bit of extra income if you have a decent amount of downtime, a good set of headphones and a microphone. You will need to do what they call "tests/trials" to see if you are a good fit but basically you are testing some sort of product, website, app, or game and talk about your experience as you are on the site (this is used to get a great user experience). Here are some of my favourite sites:

Blogging: Ahh this one is pretty cool because it's now something that I do! Firstly you'd need to set up your own blog/website and there's a few ways you can monetise it. I do have to caution though it does take some time and a lot of effort and drive to get monetised but here's a few ideas! The way I monetise is through selling digital prints, the buy me a coffee support widget, google adsense, and affiliate marketing.

  • Selling your own products through your website such as a digital product like ebooks or courses. You could also sell photos, clothing etc. Whatever you want to make and sell! You can also paywall some content but I would advise against that in the really early stages.

  • Google Adsense - this has a very strict eligibility criteria but once you make it you can earn revenue from genuine interest on ads on your site.

  • Other ad platforms like infolinks, mediavine, propeller ads, and ezoic BUT please make sure you read the rules, regulations, and requirements as some of these need a really high click rate as well as some not being allowed to be used together.

  • Affiliate Marketing - this is one of the easier ones to do as all it requires is sharing a link to a product and if someone buys that product through your link, you earn a commission. Amazon has an amazing Affiliate Marketing platform that you can sign up to. However, you do need to drive a lot of traffic to your site for this to work.

  • Sponsored Content - you can reach out to brands or other blogs you'd like to work with and make sure you network network network!

  • Buy Me a Coffee - This is a great widget to add to your blog, especially if you have content that might not meet the requirements for advertisers and it's like asking for a donation for providing free high quality content online. I'd love it if you'd support mine! You can also add extra content to the buy me a coffee site (kinda like how patreon works)

  • Become a freelance writer for other blogs! Reach out to them (similar to the sponsored content above).

  • Build an email list so that you make a "target audience" and/or make a membership committee where members get access to exclusive content.

Freelancing: Unsure of what work you want to find? Well have a look at some of these cool freelance sites where you can do things like data entry, editing, writing, and so much more!

  • Fiver.com - on this site you can find freelance work like AI art, logo design, help with blogging, voiceover and much much more.

  • Upwork.com - I had this for a bit back in NZ but I was never confident enough in myself to do any writing but if you're looking for a bit of extra freelance work, you can do things like art, copyediting, ghostwriting, app developing, photo editor, SEO writing etc. etc. It's pretty cool. I should actually join up again and see what I can do as I feel like my skillset is a lot bigger than it used to be.

  • AirTasker.com - this one usually takes a bit more than just opening up your laptop but it is pretty cool! If you need a task done, you can post about said task and get help from others AND if you wanna be a task helper you can search for tasks to do and earn money. It's often things like end of lease cleaning help, moving furniture, email filing etc. all those mundane tasks that people don't want to do. It's also specific to Australia so idk if you can use it elsewhere, but if you're bored and don't mind helping out a stranger, it's a good place to start.

  • Freelancer.com - this isn't the best freelance website as you have to filter out fake clients but it does have some good work such as web development, content translation, and social media marketing.

  • Flexjobs.com - this site has a filter where you can choose from "work anywhere in the world" or "work anywhere in the USA" so it's pretty cool. However, scrolling through the job list, it's a lot of engineering and software development but if you like that sorta stuff, check it out!

  • Become a virtual assistant - basically be a assistant to someone but do it virtually (aka all online). You can check out any of the above websites to see what's on offer.

Social Media: I feel like social media jobs are really on the rise lately and this is one that I've started to try my hands at but I haven't had much luck yet. I find that it's about creating an engaged community that are happy to view your content etc. I think virality is easy, it's about getting people to stick around that's the hard part. But here's some ideas!

  • Start a YouTube Channel - Once you reach YouTube's monetisation requirements (1000 subs + 4000 hours of watch time), you can start earning through adsense. YouTube will pay you through there. It does take a while though.

  • Create a Podcast - if you like to talk about things, can edit recordings and have a decent microphone then starting a podcast might just be for you. Fun fact about me is that one of my friends and I started a podcast together but they kinda drifted off so I gave up and started my own content creation. Maybe I'll come back to it another day. Ways to monetise a podcast can be through sponsored content, patreon support, advertising, and affiliate marketing.

  • Start a blog (see above information)

  • Create Instagram and TikTok accounts that people enjoy and monetise them. "Here's" an epic article from shopify for more advice.

  • Sell your own social media management/marketing skills - you can do this through freelance sites already mentioned or you can sell your own courses through a website.

  • Feel free to reach out to brands for support and pitch your ideas to them!

Stock Photography: Stock photography is pretty simple, it's photography/videography etc. that can be purchased by others for a range of uses e.g., someone wants some stock videos in their YouTube channel. Some sites where you can sell your work as stock photos are given below:

Other Ideas: Here's a list of a few other things you might want to consider when looking at ways to make extra income online!

  • Website flipping - buying host domains, flipping them (i.e., making them better) and then selling them to someone else. This would take a bit of networking and searching but if web development is one of your skills, I highly recommend trying this out.

  • Remote Data Entry/Transcription Services - if you are a fast typer, here's a few sites you might want to consider: https://freecash.com/, https://www.transcribeme.com/, and https://tripleatranscription.com.au/

  • Online Gaming - there are a lot of apps that will pay you in vouchers to play their mobile games but you could also think about streaming on sites like Twitch and making money that way. The YouTube gaming channels tend to do really well at the moment so if you wanna capitalise on that, feel free to.

  • Become an online tutor in your expert subjects - check out "this site".

  • Become a remote graphic designer.

  • Utilise AI generated content to make money. This isn't my expert topic area so I would recommend checking out "this link" for some more information.

  • Self-publish an ebook (Amazon lets you do this for free).

Let me know what ones have worked for you or if there's anything I've missed here!

Thanks for reading.

And as always, here's some Benji tax!
