Hi friends! I think I'm kinda late to the seasonal content trend but I am trying! I LOVE to write and I recently made a post titled "50 Halloween Blog Post Ideas (For Any Niche)" and I thought I'd give some of those ideas a go - beginning with "Top 13 Scariest Horror Movies to Watch Alone (If You Dare)" #horror #movies #halloween
I've written about horror movies before in a Freaky Friday Files post - you can check that out "Freaky Friday Files: Horror Movies That Have Messed Me Up" but I thought we could talk about the Top 13 scariest horror movies to watch alone today.
Top 13 Scariest Horror Movies to Watch Alone (If You Dare)
Terrified (2017) - IMDB says "When strange events occur in a neighborhood in Buenos Aires, a doctor specializing in the paranormal, her colleague, and an ex police office decide to investigate further." The trailer
Alone With You (2021) - IMDB says "As a young woman painstakingly prepares a romantic homecoming for her girlfriend, their apartment begins to feel more like a tomb when voices, shadows, and hallucinations reveal a truth she has been unwilling to face."
The trailer
Sinister (2012) - IMDB says "A controversial true-crime writer finds a box of Super 8 home movies in his new home, revealing that the murder case he is currently researching could be the work of an unknown serial killer whose legacy dates back to the 1960s." TW: jumpscares
The trailer
The Shining (1980) - this is such a classic so I just HAD to put it on this list. IMDB says "A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter, where a sinister presence influences the father into violence. At the same time, his psychic son sees horrifying forebodings from both the past and the future." Hot Take - I prefer the book to the movie.
The trailer
The Strangers (2008) - probably not one you should watch by yourself because you'll likely be looking over your shoulder A LOT for the next wee while, but it is worth a watch. IMDB says "James Hoyt and Kristen McKay visit an isolated vacation home to enjoy some time together. However, they are in for a rude surprise when three masked assailants make their stay a nightmare."
The trailer
The Menu (2022) - IMDB says "A young couple travels to a remote island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises." I've only heard good things about this movie, but I'm still too scared to watch it.
The trailer
The Babadook (2014) - one of my favourites, but it is a lot of psychological thriller type vibes so make sure you're prepared. IMDB says "A single mother and her child fall into a deep well of paranoia when an eerie children's book titled "Mister Babadook" manifests in their home."
The trailer
The Blair Witch Project (1999) - one of those movies that changed the horror media form forever and probably best watched with friends, but I dare you to watch this one with the lights out all by yourself! IMDB says "Three film students vanish after traveling into a Maryland forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind."
The trailer
The Conjuring (2013) (and any of the other ones) - I feel like The Conjuring universe is a rabbit hole that you can easily get sucked into. I didn't mind The Conjuring itself, but the spin offs like The Nun just are way too much for me. IMDB says "Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse."
The trailer
Midsommar (2019) - I actually really liked this movie, it was very odd but I wasn't freaked out for the rest of the day after watching it by myself (although the start feels very unsettling). IMDB says "A couple travels to Northern Europe to visit a rural hometown's fabled Swedish mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult."
The trailer
The Others (2001) - I feel like this is a good movie to ease yourself into getting into the horror genre, it's quite tame compared to other horrors but also really good IMO. IMDB says "In 1945, immediately following the end of the Second World War, a woman who lives with her two photosensitive children on her darkened old family estate in the Channel Islands becomes convinced that the home is haunted."
The trailer
The Ring (2002) - maybe this one isn't really a watch alone type of movie, but I still think about the concept of this when I'm home alone and the TV isn't on. IMDB says "A journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape which seems to cause the death of anyone one week to the day after they view it."
The trailer
The Ritual (2017) - IMDB says "A group of old college friends reunite for a trip to a most dangerous country in Europe - Sweden, encountering a menacing presence there stalking them."

Some classic choices!
I'm glad there's The Ritual on this list, because I think it really is an underrated movie. I'm ashamed to say that the horror fan girl in me didn't even know about Terrified, added to my watch list right now. Thanks for sharing!
