Freaky Friday Files: Horror Movies That Have Messed Me Up

Hi friends! YAY, I managed to get a Freaky Friday Files out today wahoo! Although I feel like my brain is so overstimulated at the moment, I've had a bit of a toothache so I've taken some painkillers and already had more than one coffee today so it's like my brain is anxious but fast - you know the meme I'm referring to. Anyway!

In today's post, I want to talk about the horror/thriller/mind-f*ck movies that have either scared me so much OR messed me up in some way OR are just really good. So if you're looking for a scare, feel free to watch some of these (at your own discretion).

I also haven't watched many of the more recent horrors because I've been more into my YT lately, so maybe I should watch some more again! I feel like I'd be a good movie reviewer.

The Movies

Get Out (2017) - honestly, this movie was really well done and it's more of a psychological thriller than anything. I enjoyed it but I was left wondering if I could trust people after watching it. I'm not sure if taking the images is fair use so I'm just gonna leave them out for now. Overall, I'd give this movie a 7/10.

Us (2019) - another one of Jordan Peele's movies and I saw this one in theatres and it was SPOOKY AF. But also really well done, this piece of cinema I appreciated so much. Absolutely wonderful movie 10/10.

Midsommer (2019) - I watched this movie when I lived alone in an apartment for the first time in Melbourne and it's really long. I liked it but I don't think I appreciated the metaphors enough. It wasn't really scary but it was weird and I did enjoy how well Florence Plugh pulled her character. I'm gonna give this one an 8/10.

The Babadook (2014) - I kinda feel like you've gotta watch this movie more than once to fully appreciate it. If you know the metaphor, it isn't scary, but if you don't, it's scary. I did enjoy the mother-son dynamic for this as it was solely focused on those two. I would give this a 7/10.

The Nun (2018) - now I've seen most of The Conjuring movies but this one freaked me the f*ck out. I watched this at the movies and I could not sleep for the whole night because of how scared I was of the demon and the jumpscares. The image is freaky. I would say a 6.5/10 but extra points for how well the jumpscares scared me so let's bump it up to a 7.5.

Oculus (2013) - another stunning piece of cinema and the worst twist you could think of that happens at the end. The brother and sister dynamic is great, acting is great. I love it, but this movie's ending still haunts me.

Sanctum (2011) - of course I had to put this one on here, it's LITERALLY the reason I hate caves so much, they're scary (plus and spoiler alert - only one person survives, it's dumb).

4/10.

Shutter Island (2010) - this one is definitely more of a psychological thriller and I was so mad the first time I watched it and I legit think Luke is still mad that I made him watch this one as well because he didn't believe the "twist". I would give this one a 9/10. Also, for some reason, I thought Mark Ruffalo's character was Tobey Maguire. Like is that a mandala effect?

Mirrors (2008) - this is one of those movies I know I've seen but blocked out. I remember talking about it a lot in high school because I thought it was so scary and probably one of the reasons I get scared of mirrors at night. Not bad but not good so maybe a 6/10.

Sidenote I didn't realise that most of these are in chronological order - it wasn't my intention, it was just as I thought of them LOL.

The Shining (1980) - one of my favourites, but I do prefer the book because If feel like it takes me there more than the movie does. Stephen King will always be one of my favourite authors of all time. 8/10 just because the book is better.

The Strangers (2008) - SOOOO scary. This is one of those movies where it could actually happen IRL so it scares you more. And I watched this movie a few times (why? I don't know, don't ask LOL) and every time it was still so scary. 9/10 for just how scary it was.

The Cabin in the Woods (2011) - this movie has given me SOOO many nightmares because it's like ALL the horror movies coming into one. It's really well done and I do enjoy the amount of Kiwis and Aussies that are in it. I would give this a 8/10 for how much impact it had on my life.

House of Wax (2005) - this movie is just really weird and I feel like it's more of a slasher film but for someone reason when I was younger I really liked it? What a weirdo. 5/10.

Any of the Wrong Turn movies (although I feel like they got progressively less scary as they kept going. Less is more sometimes. The most recent one had a bit of a culty vibe so that was cool but the older ones (like 2003 vibes) scared me because of the horror villains - I thought they were gnomes that had come to life. 6/10.

Dawn of the Dead (2004) - yes, in high school my friends and I used to have horror movie nights and yes, we watched this one and at the time it wasn't scary but then after I watched Shaun of the dead I suddenly became really scared of zombies (I HATE zombies). I'm a weirdo though. 5/10 mainly because now I'm scared of zombies and I'm gonna blame these sorts of movies.

The Road (2009) - this is a good movie but it's just really sad. 6/10 because it's too sad.

Se7en (1995) - amazing movie but some of the cast are f*ckwits now so that sucks (aka Kevin Spacey, yuck). It's a really good movie and massive twists throughout but the ending, oh my god the ending. Once you watch this movie, the ending will never leave your mind. 10/10 for this one but probably don't eat while watching.

The Bay (2012) - I know, I know, I feel like this one I shouldn't be scared of but it really scared me. 7/10 for the production and "mockumentary" style film - kinda like The Blair Witch Project but scarier.

Memento (2000) - a classic mindf*ck movie, but really good if you're wanting something a bit different. I give this one a 8.5/10.

One Hour Photo (2002) - if you're a fan of Robin Williams (but not in comedy) then this horror mystery is for you! 8/10 for how creepy it is.

The Departed (2006) - I'm mainly putting this here because I really enjoyed this movie. I know it's kinda "old" but it always makes me excited to watch and I've now realised that this is one of those movies that I could watch more than once so I'ma give it a 9/10 (mainly because it's really long).

The Ring (2002) - this movie scared me soooo much that I refuse to watch the Japanese version. Like how can the TV be so scary? 7/10.

Let me know if you've seen ANY of these movies in the comments below AND if you have any recommendations for me to check out.

That's all for now.

Much love, Ash x
