Kia Ora! Yes, I know, it's a super late post from me today but we've had a chokka day and I am wrecked. I think adrenaline took over allowing me to walk a lot of steps today (but I'm definitely glad it did). Anyway, the weather was amazing today! I woke up a bit dizzy but pushed through and tried to keep as hydrated as possible.
For an early birthday adventure, Luke and I drove to Phillip Island to stay tonight! We headed off early to see if we could see the pelicans being fed in San Remo at lunch time and have a nice lunch there. Unfortunately, due to a large crowd (likely due to Melbourne Cup Day tomorrow), the pelicans decided not to come down for their daily feeding. But, we did learn a few things about them AND then we saw a stingray in the water, that was so bloody cool. I've never seen anything like that in the wild before. Very special. We had some lunch in San Remo and then headed to the Koala Conservation Reserve where we saw so many koalas + joeys, lots of birds, and a swamp wallaby! I also got a glow-in-the-dark t-shirt too. It was about 2:30 at this point and I was really struggling to walk around (the heat didn't help) so we headed to check into our cute little Air Bnb - I'll talk more about that tomorrow! After we checked in, we headed off for a swim in the beach - the water was freezing but it was good to cool off on a hot day. For dinner, we headed to the other side of Phillip Island - Cowes, where it was really packed and we were worried we weren't going to find anything for dinner but there was a cute little wine bar called "Grenache" that we stumbled across and being two wine lovers, we were drawn in. We shared a charcuterie board and I made Luke try pate and he said it wasn't as bad as he thought (so I'm glad b/c the liver in it is probably high in iron and I need that rn haha). We also had a lemon parfait for dessert (to share ofc) and it was delish! I saw it on the specials menu and it's not something I usually go for but I loved it.
We then set off on an adventure to chase the sunset. We went to a beach we weren't sure we should be at (kinda near the penguin parade but not on the same side - Luke says it's called Cat Bay Beach?!) but there was absolutely no one else around and we could see other cars a bit further up at a different viewpoint so we took the camera gear and went down to the beach! We got some great sunset shots and we also saw heaps of Cape Barren Geese. We were also about to leave but couldn't find my lens cap (it was in Luke's pocket LOL), but it was definitely a moment of serendipity because a lightning storm started so we saw a bit of that. That was really cool to watch. As we walked up, we also saw a group of people in high-vis and I was worried that someone was going to come and take my camera's SD card off me but it turns out they were storm chasers and probably shouldn't have been there either. We then decided we wanted to head up a bit further and we only had about 20 minutes at the next point because it was closing but we saw more of the sunset AND I got a video of the lightning (only on my phone but I was so happy I got it because it's not something I've ever taken photos or videos of before). I'm going to leave all my camera photos to editing until we get home because the reception isn't great here and I'm tired. But on the drive back we saw a random penguin (and some ASSHOLE taking a FLASH photo of him - like are you stupid? You're not allowed to take photos of the penguins at the penguin parade because people always use stupid flash, but like respect any animal and NEVER use flash photography when taking photos of animals. Seriously). Anyway, mini rant over. We also saw some Cape Barren Goose Goslings and heaps of wallabies. I also saw a rabbit! We're back at our accommodation now having a cup of tea and winding down before bed. But I shall return tomorrow night with even more adventures tomorrow!
For today's question, I want to know, what's your moment of serendipity?
Ka kite! Goodnight! Ash xx
The time we saw a penguin at Brighton Beach 🐧
What a great day 😊
