Kia Ora, Happy Thursday! It's an early post today (I really should get some consistency in what times I post - but random hours and shift work make routine and consistency hard). Anyway, I will eventually start scheduling in posts and writing things in advance but for now, I am going to keep them as my daily rambles of my stream of consciousness. So I really hope you all enjoy! Sometimes it takes me awhile to write my blogs because I keep going back and adding things throughout the day - it really reminds me of when I used to research for university. Now, research is something I really miss. And for some reason, when I am learning, I feel like the days go a bit faster and that I'm closer to the best version of myself.
Today was meant to be an office day for me but I am WFH due to my fatigue and feeling grateful that it was okay to do today. Waking up with a constant tummy-ache and dizziness is really not fun. It is getting to the stage where my health is going to need to come first so I am currently having many conservations with people on what to do next. I kinda wish I could just feel well all the time so none of this would be happening.
Anyway, enough about me complaining. Let's keep with the foodie ice cream theme today and explore some of the world's weirdest ice cream flavours. I kinda wanted to do this last night but it got too late and I needed sleep.
The World's Weirdest Ice Cream Flavours
Hidden Valley Ranch Flavoured Ice Cream (U.S.A) - this one was only available for a limited time (I believe two weeks during May 2023) and it sounds like it did not go down well with many bloggers recommending to pick absolutely any other ice cream flavour that is out there. As a kiwi, I have no idea what ranch tastes like, I mean, I think it would be like mayo but I really have no idea and I don't imagine that mayo ice cream would be any better. Glad it's gone from shelves.
Heinz Tomato Sauce Ice Cream (UK) - nope, tomato sauce and ice cream do not go together. No thank you. They also launched some other flavours like BBQ and salad. Shudder.
Durian Ice Cream (Singapore) - I've never tried Durian but I know it smells bad so I dunno what this would be like but apparently Durian is a Low FODMAP food so it would probably be good on my tummy and in thinking about it more, it's only weird because the fruit smells bad but mixing fruit with ice cream is a pretty normal flavour combination.
Black Sesame Ice Cream (Japan) - I've actually had this type of ice cream and I really liked it. More than I thought I would. Luke and I tried it at the Japanese Restaurant Okami. It kinda had a bit of an aniseed taste mixed with a bagel flavour, kinda smokey as well. I enjoyed it.
Spahettieis (Germany) - this is not so much a flavour but more of a novelty way to serve ice cream. Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and strawberry sauce served as Spaghetti. I'd probably try this for the quirkiness. Apparently this was designed as a compromise for children who wanted ice cream and not a plate of Spaghetti hehe.
Corn Ice Cream (Mexico) - I'm 50/50 on this one. When I hear corn ice cream, I imagine it would taste like a fresh corn salsa but creamier or maybe more of a popcorn taste. I don't know! I'd for sure try it if it was available in an ice cream shop.
Cicada Ice Cream (U.S.A) - this one has sparked a lot of controversy, apparently very popular with the general public but not so much with the health professionals. Apparently people would collect dead cicadas, rip their wings off, and then boil them with some brown sugar and milk chocolate and make an ice cream from there. Interestingly, cicada ice cream was made to raise awareness about sustainability, not shock the world. Some fun facts about it can be seen "here".
Blue Cheese Ice Cream (New Zealand) - a flavour entered into the annual ice cream awards in 2017. I mean I think it would work, maybe not a blue cheese but a cheese ice cream I would be down for - my cheese bias is definitely coming out as we speak.
Fairy Bread Ice Cream (Australia, specifically Thornbury, Melbourne) - I imagine this would just taste like rainbows and sprinkles but I'll keep an eye out for this flavour around Melbourne to get a better verdict.
Horse Meat Ice Cream (Japan) - UMMM no thank you, that is an odd flavour. People who have tried this have said it's like eating dog food. Yep, no gross, not for me thank you.
So there you have it, 10 of the weirdest ice cream flavours around the world. Which ones would you dare try?
I'm kinda liking the ice cream vibe for today so let's also explore some fun facts about ice cream!
Apparently New Zealand is the biggest consumer of ice cream per capita in the world with the consumption of 28.4 litres per year (can confirm, I have always eaten a lot of ice cream in both NZ and Australia) - https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/the-top-ice-cream-consuming-countries-of-the-world.html
Ice Cream was allegedly invented in China sometime between 618 - 907 AD - https://ice-cream.org/about-the-ice-cream-alliance/history-of-ice-cream/#:~:text=The%20earliest%20evidence%20of%20anything,'refrigerated'%20before%20being%20served.
Ice Cream cones were invented by accident. Once a vendor ran out of ice cream dishes to serve ice cream in, they went to the waffle pastry shop next door and a waffle was rolled up in the shape of a cone - https://www.rd.com/list/foods-invented-by-accident/#:~:text=Ice%20Cream%20Cones,-Technically%2C%20Italo%20Marchiony&text=Hamwi%20also%20deserves%20some%20credit,and%20the%20rest%20is%20history.
There is a correlation between purchase of and consumption of ice cream during economic recession - https://qz.com/unilever-ice-cream-sales-inflation-benefits-revenue-1850673152
Harry Burt is credited with revolutionising ice cream trucks (the first person to have an ice cream truck) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Burt
The more you know! There's a bunch more but we can leave them for another day and wrap up today's daily rambles there.
For today's question, what is your favourite dessert? I'm a big fan of ice cream/gelato, donuts, and also anything black forest flavoured esp a black forest gateaux. So good. Such a big sweet tooth.
Anyway, hope you all enjoyed learning about ice cream today! That's all for now. TTFN
Ka kite,
Much love,
Ash xx
