Day 13 of "Figuring it Out" - Foodie Vibes

Updated: Sep 25

Good evening! It's a late post from me today as it's been an office day and Luke and I do date nights on Wednesdays do we usually get home later than we normally would. But welcome to day 13 of figuring it out!

Work was very very hard today and my tummy hurts (what else is new) haha. Anyway, after work, Luke and I headed out to Fonda for our date night and then got ice cream at Messina Fitzroy to add to our ice cream rating thingo!

Fonda has introduced new torta sliders (mini burgers) so we definitely had to try one of those - and good for me to get some extra beef in with my iron levels being so low. But it was SOOOO yummy. I rate it as one of the best sliders I've ever had. I didn't take any pics though. We also saw some cute ducklings in Carlton Gardens.

Ice cream

For today's ice cream adventures, Luke had the milk chocolate choc peanut fudge and for his second flavour, salted caramel and white chocolate. He rated the chocolate one an 8/10 and the salted caramel and white chocolate a 9/10 (I think there was a bit of bias here though). Currently asking if Luke has any more "ice cream thoughts". His response was; "I really liked the milk chocolate flavour through the ice cream but found myself wanting more peanut flavour throughout, but if there was less peanut, my rating would have been lower. Tbh I don't even like peanuts that much but if something says it has peanuts in it, it should have peanuts but it did at the end so yay." He was very satisfied with the salted caramel as salted caramel is one of his favourites (hence the bias) and that he liked the bits of white chocolate through it.

I had the raspberry sorbet (you can't really see it though) and the white chocolate hazelnut. The raspberry sorbet was really good, and refreshing and had that classic raspberry flavour with a bit of a tang. I do normally like a raspberry tang but this one was a bit too strong for me (maybe it was the weird-ass flavour combo I went for - in my head, I was thinking it would be nice because white chocolate goes with raspberry so well). I am going to give the raspberry sorbet a 7/10. In regards to the white chocolate hazelnut, this one tasted more milk chocolate and it felt like I was eating a Ferrero Rocher (or maybe a Raffaello without the coconut) but it was very nice. I am giving it an 8/10 on the deliciousness scale. That gives us a total of 32/40 overall. Also, we are probably a bit bias towards Messina because it's really good. Enough said!

All this ice cream talk has made me miss New Zealand's Real Fruit Ice Cream - which is basically a soft serve with frozen berries mixed in but it tastes delicious. I started talking about this to Luke on Sunday and he had no idea what I was talking about. So that's when I realised it was purely a New Zealand thing so in saying that, let's take a trip over the ditch and list some of the NZ snacks I miss now living in Australia (and all the ones I made Luke try when we went to NZ in April this year.

New Zealand Snacks I Miss

  • L&P - one of the best soft drink ever, hands down. The even did a Pineapple Lumps flavour one year, which sounds disgusting but it actually really worked. It's kinda like lemonade but nicer on your tummy. You can actually get it at Coles but it's not always in stock

  • FruJu Ice Blocks - so good. Kinda like if a Splice didn't have ice cream inside it

  • Any Lewis Road Creamery Flavoured Milk - a choccy milk that tastes amazing and doesn't hurt my tummy? Yes pls. The only downside is that they're really expensive for such small amounts

  • Griffins' Mallowpuffs - such deliciousness, a biscuit on the bottom, covered in ooeey marshmallow and then covered in chocolate. I love these

  • Cookie Time - the best bought chocolate chip cookies ever and what's really good, heating them up in the microwave for 20-30 seconds (you will thank me later). We have been able to get these at Coles in the past as well, but it is very rare

  • Chocolate Fish - I am so happy chocolate fish has its own Wikipedia page. It's a chocolate-covered marshmallow in the shape of a fish

  • Pinky - almost the same as a chocolate fish, but in the shape of a rectangle and with a bit of caramel too

  • Jelly Tips - The best ice cream on a stick ever. You can also get a Jelly Tip Whittaker's Chocolate block (also someone said to put this chocolate in the freezer so dunno what that would be like)

  • Any Whittaker's Chocolate. Enough said

  • Eta Spicy Tomato Munchos - some good chippies

That's just a few, there are definitely more things I miss and heaps of Aussie snacks I do now love (very happy that shapes are Australian because I do not think I could live without them).

So for today's question, what's your go to snack? Like a go to unhealthy junk food snack. Let me know in the comments!

Anyway, I'm off! See you later alligator

Ka kite,

Much love,

Ash xx

Definitely depends what's in the house. But nothing goes past cheese and bikkies. It is, and will always be, the ultimate snack
