Kia Ora, Good Evening, Hello, Welcome! Happy Tuesday my lovely cupcakes. I hope you have had a wonderful day and are enjoying Spring if you are in the Southern Hemisphere or Autumn if you are in the Northern Hemisphere (or Fall, whatever you call it).
Today has been one of those days. I was going to write a blog post earlier but I needed to charge my laptop so I've just been chilling out and doing some of the tasks (like folding washing) that I have been putting off so that I can tick them off my to-do list. Now that my laptop is a bit more charged, let's get into today's blog - my Tuesday thoughts and some of the world's weirdest chip flavours.
It was super busy at work today, which was nice because it made the day go faster but it was also much harder on my body because I feel like I haven't slept and just wanted to nap after work. Constantly feeling exhausted is really starting to take a toll on me and my mental health. I slept 8 hours last night, only waking up once, and I just feel like I haven't slept in days. It's not a nice feeling at all - and I would like to feel 100% and have some energy. Luke and I also found out that we will need to find a new place to live when our lease is up so that has been playing on my mind a bit as well ugh (we like it here). I managed to get out for a walk after work - only managed 25 minutes (I used to be able to do at least 2 x 40 min walks a day and/or a workout so the lack of exercise is also getting to me). But alas, I got outside, and I saw many doggos including my husky friend who always lets me say hi to him and licks my hand (so cute).
Tonight, Luke has some cricket training so I've just had a few snacks (some chippies and dip) and am watching the latest episode of "Only Murders in the Building". I highly recommend this show. Eating some chips and dip has definitely inspired today's topic. We're just going to have some leftover pasta for dinner and then Oreo Ice cream for dessert (so good).
Also weird news, Dan Andrews stepped down as Victoria's premier today. I don't really think I have the right to say much about Australian politics (as I am still a NZ citizen and not allowed to vote here) but it was an interesting thing to happen today. And I also think it's important to give voices to Indigenous people. I will leave it at that on the political debate.
For today's deep dive (or mini deep dive shall we say), let's take a look at some of the weirdest chip (crisps) flavours!
Zapp's Kettle Potato Chips Voodoo (U.S.A) - Cajun flavoured chips. I'm thinking that these would taste like a BBQ chip but the reviews say more of a salt and vinegar flavour. Nonetheless, the name voodoo would sure make these a good Halloween party treat. The packaging is pretty cute too.
Pringles Salt & Seaweed (Malaysia) - Pringles with a seaweed taste. I'm guessing it's kinda like eating a seaweed cracker - and nothing wrong with a bit of seaweed or sushi, but I probably wouldn't want my pringles tasting that way.
Asher's Milk Chocolate Covered Potato Chips (U.S.A) - NOPE, I do not want this at all. I have both a sweet tooth and a savoury tooth but potatoes and chocolate are two things I would not put together.
Cola Pringles (South Korea) - COLA should be consumed as a drink or a lolly. There is no in-between. Enough said. WTF?
Lay's Cinnamon Bun Potato Chips (Canada) - the review I've hyperlinked actually rates these chips quite highly so now I'm kinda curious to try them but I'm still on the a little weird side.
Mackie's Ridge Cut Whisky and Haggis (Scotland) - now I'm definitely a fan of whiskey but not haggis so idk what these would be like but they for sure sound interesting. I don't know if they're still available but Australia has something similar - 'Cracked Pepper and Haggis' chips available at Dan Murphy's. I might have to convince Luke to pick some up for us sometime lol.
Calbee Melts Cheeseburger Flavour (Australia) - I haven't tried this particular brand of chips but I definitely remember trying a cheeseburger-flavoured chip before (maybe it was in NZ) but all I remember was that it was pretty average.
The 2011 12 week exclusive Smith's Vegemite Chips (Australia) - I am really disappointed I was not in Australia in 2011 because these are something that I would HAVE definitely tried. Apparently, they were only available for 12 weeks from October 2011 in Coles. Now I am sad because I learning about this in 2023. The closest thing to this in Aus I can think of is Vegemite Shapes (and those are crackers, not chippies).
Bluebird's Lamington Flavour Chips (New Zealand, FML) - I am so ashamed that these were a thing in NZ. These came out in 2020 - the height of the pandemic so I think everyone went a little stir-crazy. That was a weird AF time for sure. In googling whether you can still buy them, I've just learnt that there's also a Smith's version in Australia. Even more FML. Who is eating these?? I feel so judgemental but can someone tell me if you've tried these and give me the verdict. Thank you.
Lay's Flamin' Hot Dill Pickle Flavoured Potato Chips (U.S.A/Canada) - I mean these sound nice to me. I love pickles and I love spice (my tummy doesn't but ya know). Wonder if I can find these in Aus haha.
Would you try any of these flavours? Let me know in the comments below.
So what pushes for novelty chippy flavours? Tbh, I haven't no idea and this definitely isn't my area of expertise but it's most likely due to food trends at the time and what events are influencing foodies. Some really interesting analysis on this can be seen in this article "here."
For today's question, I want to know "What is your favourite flavour of packaged chips?"
Mine is salt and vinegar or sweet chilli or there was a margarita salsa flavour back in NZ that was really yummy.
That's a more light-hearted one from me today. I'll definitely do some more creepy things but mixing up is my style.
TTFN!
Ka kite,
Ash xx
In no particular order:
- Red Rock Deli Honey Soy Chicken (pretty much any Red Rock Deli is elite)
- OG Pringles
- Smith's Sour Cream and Onion
- Sweet Chilli Grain Waves
- Thins Light and Tangy
- Woolies stacked chips!! (Seriously underrated)
There's heaps I've probably forgotten though
