Christmas Movies That Should Be On Your Watchlist!
Home Alone (1990) - IMDB says "An eight-year-old trouble maker, mistakenly left home, must defend his home against a pair of burglars on Christmas Eve."
This movie is probably my ALL time favourite Christmas movie and I think it's a classic. Give it a watch if you've never seen it, it'll make you laugh for sure.
The trailer
Elf (2003) - IMDB says "Raised as an oversized elf, Buddy travels from the North Pole to New York City to meet his biological father, Walter Hobbs, who doesn't know he exists and is in desperate need of some Christmas spirit."
I love this movie, it's such a wholesome feel good, lift up your spirits movie and it's so fun too! Any kid (or adult) would love this.
The trailer
Love Actually (2003) - IMDB says "Follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England.
I first watched Love Actually with my dad when I was quite young because my aunty (his sister) suggested we watch it because it was such a lovely movie (and it is) but watching this with my dad was just awkward so I didn't really appreciate this movie until I was an adult. But I really like how many conspiracy theories surround this movie, especially the one about Rowan Atkinson's character.
The trailer
Candy Cane Lane (2023) - IMDB says "A man is determined to win the neighborhood's annual Christmas decorating contest. He makes a pact with an elf to help him win- and the elf casts a spell that brings the 12 days of Christmas to life, which brings unexpected chaos to town."
YES, this movie is CHEESY AF and then even more cheesy but once you get past that, it's a really lovely story of a family coming together to do what's right and also a lesson that you should probably read the fine print hehe.
The trailer
The Holiday (2006) - IMDB says "Amanda lives in LA and is a movie trailer editor. Iris lives in Surrey and is a journalist. The two decide to swap houses for two weeks at Christmas - both trying to forget their troubled love lives, until love finds them anyway."
Just a lovely must watch Christmas Rom-Com.
The trailer
The Santa Clause (1994) - IMDB says "When a man inadvertently makes Santa fall off his roof on Christmas Eve, he finds himself magically recruited to take his place."
If you are like me and you grew up watching Tim Allen in Home Improvement, then this is the movie for you. It's so sweet and fun (I like the first one in all 3 of the movies, but if you want a Christmas marathon, be sure to watch all 3).
The trailer
In Bruges (2008) - IMDB says "After a job gone wrong, hitman Ray and his partner await orders from their ruthless boss in Bruges, Belgium, the last place Ray wants to be."
I mean this movie isn't technically a Christmas movie, it's just set on Christmas but it's a movie that you should watch at least once in your life!
The trailer
Gremlins (1984) - IMDB says "A young man inadvertently breaks three important rules concerning his new pet and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town."
I HAVE to put this one here because my mum had a cat called Gizmo - named after the character in the show and the day I was born, she basically ran away from the hospital and put Gizmo (Gizzie as we called her) onto my face and was like "you will be an animal person" and here we are, I love animals. But also this movie is a little bit scary being a horror/comedy but there's a lot of Christmas elements going on so it's definitely a Christmas must-watch movie for sure! Sidenote - did any of ya'll have a furby as a kid because I sure did and is the fact that they look exactly like the gremlins why they were so creepy? I can't find any definite proof that the concept was stolen or inspired by this movie, but they are eerily similar.
The trailer
Bad Santa (2003) - IMDB says "A miserable conman and his partner pose as Santa and his Little Helper to rob department stores on Christmas Eve. But they run into problems when the conman befriends a troubled kid."
I liked this movie, but it's not one I would watch more than once, but it definitely has the Christmas spirit alive throughout and it's kinda funny.
The trailer
Die Hard (1988) - IMDB says "A New York City police officer tries to save his estranged wife and several others taken hostage by terrorists during a Christmas party at the Nakatomi Plaza in Lose Angeles."
Just a classic, go watch it if you haven't. I do enjoy how there's a whole argument about whether this is ACTUALLY a Christmas movie or not and I'm gonna go with it is, especially because they always put it on TV on Christmas Day.
The trailer
It's a Wonderful Life (1946) - IMDB says "An angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed."
Even though it's from pre-feminism and colour films, it's still a classic and a lovely story.
The trailer
The Polar Express (2004) - IMDB says "On Christmas Eve, a young boy embarks on a magical adventure to the North Pole on the Polar Express while learning about friendship, bravery, and the spirit of Christmas."
This movie will FOREVER give me the heebie-jeebies because of the Uncanny Valley effect BUT it does have a really beautiful story, once you get past the creepy cartoons. And, my pen pal in Canada loves this movie so we must put it on the list.
The trailer
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) - IMDB says "On the outskirts of Whoville lives a green, revenge-seeking Grinch who plans to ruin Christmas for all of the citizens of the town."
Just a fun movie, really! I think I have an attachment to this movie because at my after school care, we would always watch this right on the holiday season with popcorn and they used to put icing sugar on popcorn which is so weird. TBH, and don't hate me, I'm not a big popcorn fan as an adult. But this movie is worth a watch.
The trailer
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) - IMDB says "Scrooge, an old miser who dislikes Christmas, is visited by spirits who foretell his future and share secrets from his past and present, which help change his view on life."
I love The Muppets so we have to put that one here for that reason and that reason alone!! Also, who doesn't love Kermit the Frog?
The trailer
A Bad Moms Christmas (2017) - IMDB says "As their own mothers drop in unexpectedly, our three under-appreciated and over-burdened moms rebel against the challenges and expectations of the Super Bowl for mothers: Christmas."
I thought this was fun and great casting and although I'm no longer a fan of Mila Kunis as a person, it doesn't mean I can't separate the art from the artist (but probably don't go in support for a convicted r$pist) just sayin. Anyway, the movie is really fun.
The trailer
Falling for Christmas (2022) - IMDB says "In the days leading up to Christmas, a young and newly engaged heiress experiences a skiing accident. After being diagnosed with amnesia, she finds herself in the care of the handsome lodge owner and his daughter."
I'm really enjoying Lindsey Lohan's comeback after she got sober, it's great and I do enjoy that she seems to really be going for the Christmas movies, but this movie is really wonderful and please, get some tissues because you will need them like I did!
